Ethos Bodywork

Are you an active person? Feeling a little stiff and run down after that crazy workout? Bodywork and massage can improve your recovery time and increase the biogenesis of mitochondria in muscle cells. A study conducted at McMAster University (you can read the breakdown here) shows that even 10 minutes of massage after a rigorous workout can reduce inflammation and improve nutrient utilization in muscular tissue. What does this mean for you, the average recreational athlete? *POTENTIALLY* Shorter recovery times, more effective event preparation and a reduced chance of injury -or- an improved injury recovery time. Bodywork, when used as a non drug therapy can be as effective as some anti inflammatory medication in some cases. Read on here.

I hope you enjoy my newsletter focusing on keeping yourself safe this summer. Enjoy

june-july newsletter

When I went to massage therapy school I didn’t realize I was setting myself up to fulfill my lifelong passion of a productive and lasting career choice however little did I know I was inadvertently learning how to provide a much needed service to my 2 children with different disabilities. My oldest was diagnosed with a form of Autism about 4 years ago, and after a very difficult start in life my youngest was born with cerebral palsy. My oldest son is affected through sensory perception problems that usually shows up in his behavior, and my youngest is affected through his physical movement meaning he can’t walk… yet.

As a mother you can tell when your children are frustrated. My oldest boy responds to massage very well. It seems to lower his anxiety and helps him to relax. He loves massage sessions so much he climbs on my table and tells me he’s ready for his massage session! My youngest is age 2, I usually have to catch him when he is lethargic to massage him, and this is usually after his nightly bath. His legs are most affected so massaging his legs reduced the tonicity he experiences. Basically what I mean by this is the brain sends to many signals to contract the muscle and the result is stiff muscles. His legs are looser after a session, so his physical and occupational therapy is more effective for him.

I’m finding out that Massage therapy is something very beneficial for children with Autism, and Cerebral Palsy. Both disabilities are associated with nervous system issues. Massage therapy is important, but a small part of the equation when dealing with the complexity of both problems. I use massage therapy to address the physiological effects that take place during massage therapy session. These include increased circulation of blood flow throughout the body, as well as nutrient exchange in the whole body to include organs, soft tissues, as well as the brain. This helps to improve the global function of the body and, in turn, the bodies’ cognitive function.
